What is Reach the Day?
CureSearch Hosts Reach the Day
June 21-22, 2010

Reach the Day is our opportunity to request full funding of the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act and to assure that children’s cancer research continues to receive Congressional appropriations.
Reach the Day marks the 10th annual mobilization of the children’s cancer community in Washington, DC to stress the need for Federal funding for children’s cancer research. In September 2000, at the invitation of Congresswoman Deborah Pryce of Ohio, a small group of parents descended on the nation’s Capitol to provide testimony about children’s cancer to members of Congress. This event took place one year after the death of Congresswoman Pryce’s 9 -year-old daughter, Caroline Pryce Walker, from neuroblastoma. Mrs. Pryce, now retired from Congress, continues to be an inspiration to the families who come together for Reach the Day.
At that first gathering, many members of Congress and their staff were unaware that children even suffered from cancer nor did they know that cancer was – and continues to be – the leading cause of death by disease in children.
In 2008, we celebrated the passage of the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act, landmark legislation that holds the promise of $30 million per year for five years dedicated to children’s cancer research.
Thanks to the work of CureSearch advocates across the country in partnership with committed Congressional champions, 2009 brought $5.6 million in appropriations for children’s cancer research and programs, and a commitment from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health to increase funding for children’s cancer research.
The voices and stories of families whose lives have been forever changed by having a child diagnosed with cancer have moved Congress. We have come a great distance but we will not stop – not until we Reach the Day when every child with cancer can be guaranteed a cure.
