At more than 200 Children's Oncology Group member institutions worldwide, dedicated physicians, nurses and scientists conduct clinical trials and perform research to identify cancer causes and pioneer treatments and cures. Children’s Memorial Hospital, a COG institution, is the place where kids come first. They are Illinois’s only freestanding hospital exclusively for kids, and home to more than 20 of the largest pediatric specialty programs in the Chicago metropolitan area.

With 1,100 pediatric specialists focusing on 72 specialties in multiple locations, Children’s Memorial routinely provides more care to more young people than any other Chicago area hospital or medical center. They are also consistently ranked as Illinois’ top pediatric hospital and one of the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report.

The Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases is the region’s single largest center dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of childhood cancer, leukemia, brain tumors, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, hemophilia and other blood disorders. In 2005, the center received approximately 200 new pediatric cancer cases. In fact, they treat more than half of all area children diagnosed with brain tumors and about a third of those diagnosed with leukemia, solid tumors and blood diseases

In addition, Children’s Memorial’s Stem Cell Transplant Program has performed more than 700 stem cell transplants for malignant and non-malignant illnesses, and offers one of the largest outpatient stem cell transplant programs available in the country today.

The Cancer Program at Children’s Memorial offers a family-centered, state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary approach. The program aims to provide the highest quality diagnostic and treatment services for children and adolescents with any form of cancer. A team of pediatric oncologists, surgeons of different specialties, nurses and supporting staff are involved in the care of these children – from diagnosis to long-term survival to palliative care.

  • Patients gain access to the latest diagnostic and treatment methods for cancer through their membership in the Children’s Oncology Group. COG has also been the principal source of advances and increasing cure rates for childhood cancer.
  • As a member of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium, a prestigious group supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute, CMH participates in innovative studies designed to improve survival and quality of life for children with brain tumors.
  • Through the creation of the Survivors Taking Action and Responsibility (STAR) program, CMH has taken the lead in cancer survivor care. The program tracks more than 1,300 survivors and sees about 360 patients annually.

In 2001, Children’s Memorial became the nation’s first pediatric hospital – and the first hospital in Illinois – to receive the Magnet Award from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The award is the highest accreditation given for nursing excellence, and earned by less than three percent of hospitals nationwide. Children's Memorial is proud that their Magnet status was redesignated last year.

Another focus on nursing excellence is certification in pediatric oncology (CPON).  The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation has set the standard for recognizing nursing knowledge of practice in a defined functional or clinical area of oncology nursing.  To date, Children's Memorial has 27 CPON certified nurses and advanced practice nurses in the ambulatory clinic, day hospital, STAR Program, satellite facility, in-patient unit and among the nursing leadership team.  Validating our practice through CPON certification is a way to demonstrate to our patients, families and colleagues that we are dedicated to providing the best pediatric oncology care.
