Constipation.

Some of the medications used to treat cancer and its side effects are known to cause constipation (less frequent, hard stools). Medications known to cause constipation include Vincristine and many drugs used to reduce pain. It is easier to prevent constipation than it is to treat it. Some ways to avoid constipation include:

  • Drinking water several times each day. If you are unable to drink a lot of liquids, try foods that are high in water content (lettuce, fruits).
  • Eat foods that are high in fiber (fruit, vegetables, salads and whole grains). When starting a high-fiber diet, do it slowly (increasing fiber by 5 grams per day). A fiber supplement can also help.
  • Your doctor may prescribe a medicine to make the stools softer. Do not use enemas or suppositories without talking with your doctor first.
