Fatigue.

During treatment, you will probably experience fatigue This can linger even after treatment is completed. Fatigue can be described as feeling tired, weak or sad. There are many causes of fatigue, including:

  • Cancer treatment (chemotherapy, surgery or radiation)
  • Low blood counts
  • Poor nutrition
  • Fever
  • Pain
  • Changes in sleep or a decrease in sleep
  • Worrying
  • Trying to do too much

How to increase your energy level

  • If your red blood cell count is low, the physician may recommend a blood transfusion.
  • Improve your nutrition by paying special attention to the amount and quality of food you are eating. Try to make each snack or food as nutritious as possible. It’s often easier to tolerate small frequent snacks of nutritious foods than big meals. You can talk to a nutritionist for additional ideas.
  • Avoid caffeine-containing products, including sodas.
  • Evaluate and treat pain.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Establish a regular bedtime routine, and try get 8 hours of sleep each night.
  • Incorporate some physical activity into your routine every day.
  • Talk with your doctor about working with a physical therapist to create an exercise program that can help you increase your strength.
  • Alter your regular routines to avoid over-extending. You may want to reduce your attendance at school to half-days.
