The Salt Lake City community gathered to honor and remember those around them affected by children's cancer. With 80 children's cancer survivors in attendance, there was much to celebrate, but no one could forget the children that have been lost.
Over 3,000 participants helped raise $157,000 to help fund clinical trials in local hospitals and lifesaving research conducted across the country. Guests enjoyed carnival games, balloon animals, a visit from Primary Children's Hospital therapy dogs, and music from Radio Disney.
Team Lexe Kick's earned the spot of top fundraising team, raising an impressive $18,000 for childhood cancer. The team raised funds in honor of Lexe who was diagnosed in April with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Lexe is a competitive soccer player who was looking forward to attending the University of Arizona when bruises and a persistent cold brought her to the doctor for testing. She was given medication and thought that everything would be fine, but the blood test showed that she had Leukemia. She began treatment right away, and has now completed her fourth and final round of chemotherapy. She is looking forward to the day when she can ring the bell and conclude her fight with cancer.
The 80 survivors in attendance are a great reminder of the incredible advances that have been made in the children's cancer treatment. During the opening ceremony they were named CureSearch Champions and honored with medals. A moment of silence was also observed while balloons were released in memory of those who have been lost to childhood cancer.
The Salt Lake City CureSearch Walk brought together the community to show that through awareness and fundraising a cure for childhood cancer can be found. Visit CureSearchWalk.org to find out how you can join a walk in your community.
