CureSearch for Children's Cancer funds and supportstargeted and innovative children's cancer research with measurableresults, and is the authoritative source of information and resourcesfor all those affected by children's cancer.
The Nick Currey Fund was established by Ralph and Nancy Currey in memory of their son, Nick, who died in November 2005 after a 14-month battle with cancer. Nick was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in August 2004, on the eve of his departure for college.
The fund’s purpose is to support research to find a cure for the disease that took Nick’s life. Ewing sarcoma is a cancer of the bone (and at times soft tissue) that strikes children, adolescents and young adults like Nick. The Currey family hopes that research supported by the Nick Currey Fund will hasten the arrival of the day when no young person’s life ends prematurely because of Ewing sarcoma.
The fund was established with CureSearch through the encouragement of Michael Harris, MD, head of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Hackensack University Medical Center. Dr. Harris was Nick’s oncologist and close friend for 15 years.
Cancer is the #1 disease killer of children, cutting short the lives of more children under the age of 20 than any other disease. More than 13,500 children are diagnosed with cancer each year and over 40,000 children are treated for cancer each year. Despite these statistics, there is very little funding directed to childhood cancer research compared to other childhood diseases or adult cancers.
Because meaningful cancer research requires substantial funding, the Currey Family's initial goal for the Nick Currey Fund is to raise at least $1 million to support research to find a cure for Ewing’s sarcoma. But their fundraising efforts won’t stop until a cure is found!
Although the goal is ambitious, the Currey family welcomes donations in any amount as any gift reflects respect and caring for Nick and other children stricken with cancer.
Donations to the Nick Currey Fund will be used exclusively to fund Ewing sarcoma research projects selected by the Currey family in consultation with Dr. Harris and other leading pediatric oncologists. To donate to the Nick Currey Fund, please click here.
