The CureSearch Walk - Tampa Bay Area took place on a beautiful September morning near St. Petersburg pier along the water of Tampa Bay, at North Straub Park. Over 725 people took part in the event which raised more than $72,000 for children's cancer research. All Children's Hospital rallied numerous teams at the event and one of its teams, 7S Fights by Night, raised over $10,000.
Fox News anchor Charley Belcher was the emcee of the event, and noted that he was personally motivated to participate because his daughter is a leukemia survivor. Other speakers included: Ashley Rutenberg, who at 25 years old is a 21 year children's cancer survivor; Gregory Hale MD and research manager Frances Hamblin, from All Children’s Hospital; and Krista Garcia RN , of St. Joseph's Children's Hospital – Tampa.
Children of all ages were treated to a face painter while Radio Disney entertained with activities and music. Walk sponsor Panera Bread gave out bagels and New Tampa Provisions provided Boar's Head hotdogs after the Walk.
During the opening ceremony, a white rose was given to each family walking in memory of a child. Then, 37 children who had either survived children’s cancer or are currently in treatment were honored as CureSearch Champions and awarded medals. These children then led the Walk carrying a banner that read "These are the Reasons We Walk".
