Dr. Stuart Gold

Dr. Stuart Gold is one of my favorite people in the world.   He is not just an amazing doctor, he is a great person.  When I was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 19, I became a patient in the pediatric oncology department at UNC Hospitals.  Dr. Gold cared for me through surgery and radiation therapy, and became a friend when I was completely overwhelmed.  I am now 21, cancer-free, and interning with CureSearch for Children’s Cancer in the Southeast regional office.  I am so grateful to Dr. Gold for getting me where I am today.

Besides having expert knowledge about pediatric cancer and all that comes with it, he has an innate ability to comfort and connect with his patients. He is unbelievably dedicated to his job.  I remember seeing him for a regular appointment a few months ago when he had returned from his first vacation in YEARS!  He is always there for patients and parents to ask questions or talk through treatment plans and next steps.  I think that’s what makes him an incredible Principle Investigator for the Children’s Oncology Group at UNC Hospitals.

Dr. Gold goes above and beyond in supporting children’s cancer causes.  He spoke at the CureSearch Walk in Durham, N.C., in February, and he maintains connections with Make-A-Wish and the Ronald McDonald House.  Though he’s involved in many activities, he never spreads himself thin.  When asked what clinical trial interests him most, he said all of them.  “They all advance the science of caring for kids with cancer, improve outcomes and help families now and in the future who will have children with cancer,” he said.

Few people would say the pediatric oncology department of a hospital is a happy place.  However, somehow Dr. Gold makes it one of the happiest places there is!  Everywhere you turn there’s a smiling child or a nurse cracking a joke.  The atmosphere in Dr. Gold’s clinic cannot be beat.  I truly believe that the positive attitudes and infectious personalities of Dr. Gold and his staff contribute to the treatment of every single patient that enters the clinic.

Given his education from the University of Colorado and Vanderbilt University, it is no surprise that Dr. Gold has an extensive knowledge and mastery of his field.  What stands out about him and makes him an excellent match with CureSearch, is his relationship with his patients.  CureSearch is lucky to have him on board!
