Ultimate Hike dedicated to the memory of cousin
When serving as an Infantry Team Leader for the US Army in
Baghdad, Drew Edwards’s platoon encountered an improvised explosive device (IED),
causing serious injury to his left leg. After a year of surgeries in an attempt
to save his leg, it became clear that amputation was the best option. “Sure,
you feel bitter about it first, but then you realize you need to get on with
life. I prefer a more positive approach,” says Drew.
Two years later, Drew again received devastating news. His
cousin, Lucy, had been diagnosed with cancer just two days short of her first
birthday. Lucy fought cancer for 5 ½ months, eventually losing her battle with cancer.
After Lucy’s death in 2010, Drew and his family were looking for a way to get raise
awareness for children’s cancer. They found the CureSearch Walk, and became avid
supporters. When CureSearch announced that the Ultimate Hike Program
was coming to his town, Drew knew it was the perfect opportunity to become even
more involved. Drew recruited Lucy’s father to Hike with him and the pair,
along with fifteen other hikers, began training for the 22 mile hike on the
Ozark Highlands Trail in Arkansas which took place on December 8th.
The trail is an intense 22 miles, with serious changes in
elevation, which would be tough for any hiker. Drew’s injuries made it
even tougher. “Although my injuries will make this hike difficult, it is going
to be a walk in the park compared to what these children and their families
must face,” said Edwards.
