Volunteers Give Back to CureSearch

Debbie Newton and Melissa Irwin aren’t your average volunteers; this mother and daughter-in-law duo doesn’t have a family member affected by children’s cancer. They do have big hearts and a desire to give back. It started as an aspiration to get involved in the community, as they searched for the right cause; children with cancer touched their hearts and led them to the CureSearch and several CureSearch events. Once they learned more, they knew they had to help.

What began at the CureSearch Walk in Phoenix has grown into a passion for the organization and a desire to help in any way they can. For each event, Debbie and Melissa have fundraised by forming teams in honor or memory of children across the nation. They have team members sign a CureSearch t-shirt and send it to the family they’re fundraising for as a token of their support. At the Santa Barbara Walk they were even able to meet the young girl they had been fundraising for.

Each CureSearch event reminds Debbie and Melissa that every little bit counts of all the hardships that the children and families fighting cancer experience. Every time they meet a child with cancer they marvel at their amazing attitude. This has pushed them to volunteer for three CureSearch Walks and an Ultimate Hike. They’re not only best friends, but mother and daughter-in-law, recently embarking on their fifth event, a Return to Recess event in San Diego, California.
