CureSearch for Children's Cancer funds and supportstargeted and innovative children's cancer research with measurableresults, and is the authoritative source of information and resourcesfor all those affected by children's cancer.
It was a beautiful morning on Sunday, May 20 at Franklin Square in Philadelphia as friends and family gathered to celebrate the advances made in children's cancer treatment and honor those who have lost their battle. Over 600 walkers joined together to raise funds for children's cancer research, including clinical trials at local hospitals like St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dr. Halligan, Chief of Oncology at St.Christopher's Hospital for Children spoke to everyone in attendance and shared with them how important events like the Philadelphia CureSearch Walk are to finding a cure for children's cancer. The $64,082 raised by volunteers will support enrollment of patients in clinical trials at Children's Oncology Group hospitals in Philadelphia and across the nation.
The mission of CureSearch is close to volunteer and walk committee chair, Stephanie Thomas. Her son passed away when he was just two years old from Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (AT/RT), a rare cancer of the brain or nervous system. Stephanie didn't want other families to have the same experience and therefore decided to approach her company, Allied Wire & Cable, to sponsor of CureSearch. Allied Wire & Cable honored her son by donating over $13,000 to CureSearch and presented their generous donation at the Philadelphia CureSearch Walk.
During the opening ceremony, loved ones lost to children's cancer were honored with a balloon release. Then, current patients and those in remission were named CureSearch Champions during a medal ceremony. Families also enjoyed fun activities, food and games to celebrate their fundraising efforts. While there is still much to be done in the fight against children's cancer, attendees of the Philadelphia CureSearch Walk walked away knowing they had helped CureSearch fund research that brings us one step closer to guaranteeing a cure for all children.
