CureSearch congratulates Cherie Polen, RN of Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL, the winner of CureSearch's Favorite Nurse contest held in honor of National Nurse's Week! Cherie - thank you for your hard work and dedication to children with cancer. Below is 9-year old Becca Mueller's winning submission.
My favorite all time nurse is Cherie Polen, RN. She took care of me most of the time during my inpatient stays at Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL. Especially on the days I had spinals or bone marrow tests, CT scans, blood tests, infusions, and NG tube insertions. She always made me feel comfortable that made the procedure go ok. She would check in with me before she would end her shift to see if I wanted her to sneak any sherbert or special treats into the hospital for me.
I was an inpatient for 3 months when I was first diagnosed and Cherie went with her family on vacation and took me with her. She made a Gingerbread Girl with my picture on it and took it with her all over Disney. It was like I was there. She would email pictures to my mom's computer and I got to see Disney from my hospital room. I'm like one of her kids. I don't know how I would have made it through all those hard months without her.
